My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?), starring and written by Rob Madge, former Ashbourne student, hit the West End in London for a second run in October.

Rob joined Ashbourne on a full scholarship and embraced college life wholeheartedly becoming co-president of the student council and excelling in all subjects.

“Rob was a role model and innately talented,” reminisces Fran who taught drama at the time.

Rob’s first year drama production received the highest ever grade and their final year play Viable even made it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the performance space.

Ashbourne has been fortunate to enrol exceptional scholarship students over the years including graduates from the Sylvia Young’s specialist theatre school which includes, most recently, Rob Madge.

Lord Robert Winston, pioneer in fertility treatment and popular TV presenter, visited Ashbourne in October to deliver a lecture to GCSE and A level students about medicine and his own contributions to science and politics.

Robert Winston was made a life peer in 1995 for his pioneering work in IVF and is Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London. He has also produced many successful science and medicine-based documentaries for TV and radio.

Ashbourne Medical School students practise ‘real-life’ medical dramas this November in preparation for university interviews.

Ashbourne’s Medical School Programme (AMSP) and Performing Arts department set the stage for students to role play a range of medical scenarios they may encounter as doctors. Sam, who takes part in the AMSP, received plaudits for his sensitive handling of an elderly patient, wonderfully performed by drama teacher Jo-Lee, with other notable performances from Kian and Tomi.

Getting into Medical school is not only about excellent academic achievement, although that is a requirement. Students need to be fully equipped to start a career in medicine, be up to speed with current issues and feel confident during interviews.

Amy Young, Faculty Head for Natural Science, leads Ashbourne’s Medical School Programme and has been successfully enabling students to apply for medical school for many years. She is a Medical School interviewer for UCL and is also Head of Sixth Form at Ashbourne.

In a highly unusual and difficult year, we are delighted that our hard working students have attained an average of 66% A*A for their A level results. Congratulations to them and our teaching staff who have helped them achieve this.

For those unable to get the grades they feel they are capable of, we offer A level resists/retakes and one year A level courses.
