Bosworth Independent College were extremely honoured when Mr Hassan Shawky, Minister Plenipotentiary, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Egyptian Embassy joined us at the House of Commons for the CIFE Awards. We were delighted and surprised when the request came through from the Arab Republic of Egypt in the UK asking for the opportunity to represent Egypt at the event having heard that one of our Egyptian students Youssef Ahmed was to receive a CIFE Award for Science.

Youssef achieved 5 A* grades at A-level in the summer of 2015 in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Arabic. He was offered a place to study Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College but opted instead to make applications to universities in Europe to follow his true ambition to study Medicine. Whilst at Bosworth he took part in the British Biology Olympiad and received a Silver award and in the British Physics Olympiad he gained Bronze II. He was nominated at Bosworth College’s end of the year awards for all three categories of college prize: Academic Achievement, Academic Effort and Students’ Student of the Year. An extremely popular student!

Fiona Pocock, Principal, told us, “It was a great pleasure to meet Mr Shawky with our former student, Youssef, of whom we are so proud.  Youssef worked so very hard to achieve his outstanding results and is a truly remarkable young man.  It was lovely that he was awarded a CIFE Academic Award for Science. That Mr Shawky requested to attend the ceremony was a huge honour, not only for Youssef, me, and Bosworth Independent College but also for CIFE too.  I took the opportunity to formally extend our thanks to the Embassy for having taken an interest in this event and for having supported Youssef.”

Youssef told us, “The ceremony was wonderful. My parents and I really enjoyed it; it was truly fascinating. I was very proud of Mr Hassan Shawky’s presence. It felt wonderful to have the support of my country on this fantastic occasion.”

Four A-level students at Bosworth Independent College have rallied their academic resources to scale the steep inclines and endure the rocky terrain that goes along with the stresses of academic study resulting in at least four A* grades each.

Youssef Ahmed, 18, from Egypt attained A* grades in Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics, adding a 5^th A* in Arabic as a spare! Youssef has exceeded the requirements of his conditional offer from Imperial College to study Biomedical Engineering and therefore has 5 days in what is known as UCAS Adjustment in which either to accept this offer or to seek an alternative if he so chooses. Youssef has always wanted to study in the bio-medical field and may be tempted to seek a place to study Medicine.

Kelenna Amadi, 17, from Nigeria has secured a place to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol with A* grades in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Further Mathematics.

Thao Dan Vu, known as Ariadne, 18, from Vietnam gained A* grades in Sociology, Mathematics, History and Economics, securing her place to study Law at Durham University. To have achieved the top A* grade in three subjects that are particularly essay-heavy is an outstanding achievement for a non-native speaker of English.

Jin Zheng , 19, from China, has A* grades in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. He has a place to study Engineering at the University of Cambridge.

Other students who achieved exceptionally strongly include:

Lik Theng Ho, 18, from Malaysia has achieved A* grades in Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry alongside an A grade in Physics. She has a highly-competitive place at the University of Southampton to study Marine Biology.

Ke Wang, known as Coco, 18, from China, who has exceeded the requirements for her place at Imperial College to study Geophysics with her A* grades in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry with an A in Chinese and Siyuan Wang, known as Shirley, 19, from China who has A* grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics plus B grades in Economics and Chinese. She has a place at the University of Warwick to study Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics.

Alongside this our British success stories at A-level include, Georgia Jeffrey who achieved A* in Psychology and A grades in Geography and Biology. She progresses from Bosworth to her first choice university of Edinburgh to read Geography. We are equally delighted for Edward Furlong who has secured his place on the popular course of Food Science with Business, which includes a year in industry at the University of Reading with his AAB results in Biology, Geography and Economics.

Last year’s British high-achievers at GCSE have gone on to continue their success at AS Level. Masem Abbas has achieved 4 A grades in Chemistry, Economics, Maths and Physics and Nicole Gray has achieved 4 A grades in Biology, Geography, Maths and Psychology. We look forward to tracking their university progression next year.

Each year CIFE awards prizes to exceptional students from member colleges. To receive a prize does not just require top results, but exceptional contribution to college life. We’re delighted to announce that, for the second year running, Bosworth students received four CIFE awards, including the top Gold Award, which went to Cliff Chung.

Cliff, from Hong Kong, joined Bosworth Independent College on a 2-year A-level course. His exceptional achievement of A* in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology with grade A in every unit and 14 out of 22 papers with full marks plus his grade A in Chinese and B in the Extended Project have helped him secure the CIFE Gold Award. His Extended Project was entitled, “The role of conformity in students’ participation in extracurricular activities” was based on experiments he had conducted himself in Hong Kong.

Cliff was awarded Silver Medal in the Chemistry Olympiad and a Gold Medal in the Biology Olympiad. He was awarded a place at Robinson College, Cambridge, to study Psychology and Behavioural Science, Psychology having been his passion for many years. Not only is Cliff Incredibly well-organised, he is also very friendly, courteous, considerate and inquisitive. Above all, he is enthusiastic about everything he does. His teachers describe him as “astute”, “sparky”, “brilliant”, “driven”, “meticulous” and “talented”.

Samson Law and Jaekyeong Lee won CIFE Awards for Science. Samson, from Hong Kong, did A-levels in one year at Bosworth . He achieved A* Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics alongside grade A in Further Maths, even though initially he had enrolled to take only 3 A-levels! Since he had no opportunity to sit any exams in January this meant he took 30 exams in May and June including 6 practicals.

Samson was awarded a Silver Medal in the Biology Olympiad. He played in the college basketball team and won the “Basketball Player of the Year” award. He is an amazing young man who is as modest as he is hardworking as he is clever. Samson hopes to be accepted to study Medicine.

Jae studied on Bosworth’s 18 month A-level course attaining A* in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics. This led to her being offered a place to read Engineering at St Edmund’s College, Cambridge. She was awarded a Bronze Medal in the Physics Olympiad.

Jae was Bosworth’s only student from Korea and made friends from a wide nationality group. Whilst in the UK she used vacations to travel to many other cities, pursuing her interest in art and architecture.

Jae’s Personal Tutor commented very soon after her arrival that she had “a great deal of mathematical and scientific talent’. Her Maths teacher similarly recognised her potential noting, “she applies concepts with consummate ease and skill’.

Omolemo Monyatsi from Botswana was awarded a CIFE College Prize. She joined us for a 2-year A-level course. She attained A* in Maths and Chemistry alongside A in Further Maths and Physics plus A in her Extended Project. Omolemo was a Bosworth pioneer for the Extended Project, and helped set the standards with her Project, entitled ‘Financial illiteracy and consumer indebtedness’. In the Chemistry Olympiad Omolemo attained a Silver Medal. She achieved 44 Bosworth Merits in her AS year, the highest number in her cohort that year.

Omolemo was a key player in Bosworth’s volleyball team. She won first place in Bosworth’s Fun Run for Sports Aid and was awarded the accolade of ‘most valued sports player’ at end of her AS year

Teachers describe Omolemo as being “kind, mature, dedicated and respected.” She says she is “ambitious, hardworking and vibrant.” We would not disagree!

Like students all over the country, students at Bosworth Independent College received their A-level results this week. With 72% of final grades being A*, A or B, we far exceeded the national average yet again.

We offer congratulations to all of our students who achieved the grades to move to the next stage of their careers but in particular to our twelve students who achieved A or A* grades in all their subjects. These include:

Evan Penn (British), who achieved A*A*A*A* in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry and will be going to Durham University next month to study Mathematics.

Cho Fung Chung (Hong Kong), who achieved A*A*A*A*A, and will be going to study Psychological & Behavioural Sciences at Cambridge University.

Omolemo Monyatsi (from Botswana), who achieved A*A*A A, and will be going to study Actuarial Science at London School of Economics.

For many, it is the last stage in their university preparation which started at least two years ago with the finalising of AS subject choices and continued with completion of UCAS forms, personal statements, university visits and interviews. They are now busy buying duvet covers and making final travel plans!

Nationally, A Level results were slightly down this year and this could be a reflection on the tightening up of opportunities to re-sit modules. New syllabuses in key subjects will start being taught from September 2015 which will mean students will be sitting exams that test everything they have learnt in two years rather than exams being separated into AS and A2 as they are now.

This will potentially make studying at this level even more challenging. It will be interesting to see if these changes impact on results in the future and if the downward national trend continues.

Although at first glance it may seem that changing the parameters makes it unfair,all students within the year group will be treated in the sameway. However, it is important that schools keep up with these demands, so they can guide students through these changing times.

Every year CIFE awards a number of prizes to exceptional students from member colleges. To receive a prize does not just require top results, but exceptional contribution to college life. Competition is fierce, and we’re delighted to announce that Bosworth students received four CIFE awards, including the top Gold Award, which went to Stanislau Yatskevich.

Stas followed a two year A level course at Bosworth College and achieved A* in all five of his A level subjects – Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Russian. He is currently studying medicine in Melbourne, Australia but has been accepted to read biochemistry at Oxford from September 2014. His main passion is the area in which biology and chemistry overlap and his stated aim is to understand how life works at the molecular level. Stas is also fascinated by history and is a published author of a historical novel. He has used his knowledge of physics to design and patent two medical devices on pumping of blood and laser scalpels. Alongside all of this Stas also found time to play football, work at the summer school and generally have fun and make the most of his experiences in the UK. He is an outstanding young man both personally and academically. Bosworth College is very proud to have been able to facilitate his success.

Stas couldn’t receive his award in person, but the other three Bosworth award winners were able to attend the prize ceremony at the House of Lords, and are pictured below.

Zhaoxi (Teresa) Wang received an Andrew Osmond Maths award. She took an eighteen month A level programme at Bosworth and achieved A* in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics and an A grade in Chinese. She dropped just 9 marks in all 12 Maths units. She hopes never to have to take another IELTS exam as long as she lives, as getting the brilliant maths results was child’s play in comparison to 7.0 in each English skill at the same sitting. However, her determination got her there and she is presently studying Actuarial Science at The London School of Economics. Teresa described herself as ’composed’,’ logical’ and ‘determined’ in her personal statement – in our reference, we described her as ‘ambitious’, ‘intelligent’ and ‘talented’, ‘kind’, ‘spirited’ and a good friend.

Babafikayomi (Baba) Bob-Soile also received an Andrew Osmond Maths award. Baba joined Bosworth in September 2011 to follow a 2 year A level programme. He achieved 600 out of a maximum 600 marks for A level Maths and 599 out of 600 for Further Maths. He also received gold certificates in 2011 and 12 in the Maths Challenge and a merit in the Kangaroo Round. He was a crucial part of the team that won the regional maths challenge, he received a silver award in Physics Olympiad and successfully completed an Open University course alongside A level study. When not competing in mathematical competitions, Baba plays basketball where he is a vital part of the Bosworth team. Perhaps more importantly, he was always very happy to help others, both in and out of the classroom, and was one of the most popular students within the student body. He is presently studying Engineering at St John’s College Cambridge.

Munir Abukhder received a CIFE College Award for exceptional contribution to life at Bosworth. He joined us in January 2012 to follow an eighteen month A level programme. He achieved A* in A level Maths, A* in Arabic, A in Biology, A in Chemistry and C in AS Psychology, and is presently studying Medicine at Birmingham University. Prior to coming to the UK, Munir worked as a volunteer in the main hospital in his city during the peak of the Libyan revolution and saw and dealt with situations many seasoned doctors would have struggled to cope with. Despite having to put his education on hold for a year and arriving late because of visa issues, he started his A level course with enthusiasm and conviction.
