Cambridge Tutors College

Giorgio joined CTC from Japan, on to our one-year A-level course. He came with limited previous academic studies within the UK system.

He enrolled for three subjects at A level: Mathematics, Spanish and Photography. As we began to understand his abilities in languages he soon dropped Mathematics and Photography and took up Japanese and Italian and attained A* grades in all three languages. Apart from his academic ability in languages, Giorgio made fantastic progress in the year in his social development. He had struggled with interacting with others and it was a great privilege to see his progress during the year. He is a fantastic young man who will really shine at university. Giorgio had an interest in languages for many years and he is currently studying Modern Languages at university in Barcelona.

I cannot think of any student or teacher who has not enjoyed Giorgio’s company at some point during the year he was at CTC. He was reliable and always willing to join in with extra-curricular activities when he was in college. He was a pleasure to have at our college.

This year, sixteen Year 12 and Year 13 Biology students were eager to participate in the British Biology Olympiad Competition.

They sat two online tests in March and out of the sixteen, seven students received awards. With exceptional scores, two students, Nuchthita Khongbua and Kongtup Wanichjaroenporn achieved the top accolade of a gold award. Close behind were James Fairbrother, who achieved a silver and Abdurrahman Imran, who achieved a bronze award. Netiya Triraj attained a highly commended award and Ahmed Abed and Avalonah Sabao secured commended awards.

All participants received a certificate for their efforts and three Year 12 students, William Dyke, Naomi Lulsegged and Alex Zhou were within 1% of achieving commendations. Congratulations to all the students who took part.

From around 100 A level entries for the 2022 examination session our students produced some excellent results given this is also the first time students sat real ‘exams’!

These results enabled our students to reach some excellent destinations.

We were delighted to see Jian Yi Kok receive a 2017 CIFE Award for his exceptional contribution during his time at Cambridge Tutors College. He received the award from CIFE President Lord Lexden at a ceremony in the House of Lords this April.

Jian Yi joined CTC from Malaysia onto our 18-month accelerated A-level course. We awarded him a scholarship on the basis of his previous excellent academic performance and he has certainly lived up to our expectations.

He took four subjects on the 18 month A level course in Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry and attained A* grades in all three sciences and an A in Mathematics.  Jian Yi has an interest in evolutionary biology and he pursed this through his EPQ, which was based on the evolution of altruistic behaviour in the animal kingdom.  He contributed to our College magazine with articles as diverse as a piece on ‘England’s Hidden Gems’ and a review of the anime, ‘Death Note’.

Jian is now studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge.

Congratulations to the CTC Students who scooped three CIFE Awards in 2016. The award winners had a wonderful trip to the House of Lords to receive their CIFE College Awards. They were accompanied at the event by principal Dr Chris Drew.The three Awards Winners were:

Xinghao Cheng
Xinghao, from China, was awarded a prize for excellence in Maths/Further Maths and Physics. He achieved A* grades in Maths and Further Maths and together with an A* grade in Physics and an A in Economics was one of the best performing A level students at CTC in 2015.  Interestingly he only dropped two marks in Maths and this was in the easy C1! He was also awarded SMC Gold; Senior Kangaroo qualifier. Described by his tutors as a perfectionist, a privilege to teach and a shining example to his peers, Xinghao won a place at Magdalen College, Oxford where he is now studying Engineering.

Yan Yin Lim     (Nicole)
Yan Yin from Malaysia, received a prize for excellence in Economics. She achieved the highest Economics score in the college. With A*s in Maths and Economic and A grades in Physics and Further Maths Yan Yin is now well prepared for university to read her favourite subject: Economics at LSE. Her natural aptitude for the subject has enabled us to speculate that she may well make a significant contribution to the subject in the future.   Yan Yin made a strong impression over the years with all her teachers with her natural good humour and high level of motivation.

Carlos Maria Alava Limpo
Carlos left CTC in June 2015 with four A*’s in Double Maths, Physics and Chemistry having completed his A levels in 18 months.   He was nominated for Mathematics/Further Mathematics and Chemistry as well as the CTC college award. He is currently enlisted in the Singapore Civil Defence Force which is part of that countries nation al service.  Carlos is planning to study Natural Sciences in the future at Kings College, Cambridge.  His academic achievements did not stop with A levels. He was also awarded SMC Gold Award; Senior Kangaroo qualifier.  Carlos is one of the most polite people you could meet and he has always put others first – a very popular winner!
