Duff Miller Sixth-form College

We’re delighted that Alice Hart has been awarded a CIFE College prize for her outstanding contribution to Duff Miller College.

Alice (pictured receiving her prize from CIFE President Lord Lexden) came to Duff Miller to study Biology, Chemistry and Religious Studies to A-level and left with A*A*A* in those subjects. She also achieved an A grade in AS-level Psychology. She had a fantastic set of GCSE grades upon arrival and was a pleasure to teach throughout her time with us.

Her attitude to her studies was always impressive and her teachers always commented about her focus, determination and ability to achieve A* grades in all subjects. She deservedly earned a place at UCL to read Neuroscience, given her commitment to her studies and exemplary manner at all times. Alice is a terrifically bright and capable young woman.

Twelve months ago we interviewed a student called Chandler Durbidge who had joined Duff Miller to prove that he could overcome the opinion of his last school. We can now confirm that his hard work and support of his teachers has paid off and that Chandler has received offers from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He has decided to go to Barts- Chandler we could not be more happy for you, well done! Chandler tells you more in the video below.

Mehrbod Keshavarzi received a CIFE Award for his exceptional contribution to college life. The prize was presented by CIFE President Lord Lexden at a ceremony in the House of Lords this March.

Mehrbod started his studies with us in September 2012 and immediately shone academically in what was a very new academic system in London for him to adjust to. He took on five AS-levels in his first year with a view to carrying them on to A2-level and his outstanding grades, A*A*A*A*A*, show how focused and determined he was to achieve the best grades and go on to read Engineering at Imperial College. He balanced an excellent work ethic with the right amount of character in class and he made an impression on all those he came into contact with at Duff Miller College.

We are pleased to announce that Duff Miller student Serena Dhanani has been awarded a prestigious internship from global finance giant Deloitte. Serena beat off competition from over 2,000 entrants to win one of only 30 places on the Deloitte Scholar Scheme.

The scheme, which starts in September 2014 and lasts for eight months, will offer Serena the chance to work on challenging projects with a wide variety of high-profile clients in the financial industry.

As part of the scheme, Serena will also receive a £1,500 bursary to go travelling after the placement and before university, as well as an ongoing financial scholarship of £500 per academic year at university.

The scheme is designed for students like Serena, who will have successfully completed their A-Level examinations and will progress to a prestigious university in September 2015. Serena has been awarded a place to study Management at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Entrance to the pre-university programme is highly competitive. The selection procedure includes two online tests, a group interview and two rounds of individual interviews with a panel from Deloitte.

In addition to success in her academic studies, Serena has gained a number of other prestigious placements. In Year 12, she attended a three day conference at Morgan Stanley called ‘Step In-Step Up’. The conference is designed to encourage young women to learn more about the opportunities in the financial services industry and to encourage them to pursue careers in this profession.

In early 2014, Serena was invited to spend the day at global financial services giant Goldman Sachs, as part of their Girls INSPIRE programme, also created to encourage more young women to enter the industry. Serena spent a day at Goldman Sachs’ London office, meeting industry professionals and attending a series of presentations, including interactive business tasks and skills development activities to assist the girls in preparation for both university and future employment.

Serena also spent last summer volunteering in Argentina with Projects Abroad (http://www.projects-abroad.co.uk/). As part of the volunteer programme, Serena worked in hospitals and an orphanage, and had the opportunity to improve her Spanish language skills.
